I have never been a world-class karate competitor. I am not one of those Shotokan fighters that leaves people standing in awe of my brilliant technical ability and fighting ability. I regularly lose matches against players who have the right stuff. But I have discovered, from various instructors, certain principles of training in sparring that have enabled me to learn to hold my own against people who are better than I am.

Are you getting your butt kicked in sparring matches? Do you not understand why? OK, you know you are not the most athletic person that ever lived, and some of the guys taking you down repeatedly are pretty experienced fighters, so it is not completely surprising that you lose regularly. But is there anything you can do about it?

Yes, there is. You can learn the principles that I have learned, and you can improve your chances dramatically. Modern Shotokan classes do not, by and large, teach complete sparring skills in a methodical, logical way. So, I am going to upload to Shotokan Planet everything that I know about sparring in order to give you better results. I won't make you over from a guy who does karate twice a week into a world champion, but I can show you some important concepts that you probably do not know. And, I can show you how to practice those concepts and learn essential skills you probably lack.

All of the pointers and tips that follow are based on the assumption that you are proficient in the basic techniques of Shotokan Karate. If you are inflexible, unable to turn your hips, unable to kick above your knees, don't know how to foot sweep, and can't move around somewhat athletically, then you won't find this text to be much help. Before you can spar proficiently, it is absolutely essential that you have control over your basic techniques and that they be consistent, even if they are not perfect. Consistency is the key more than anything else, so a white belt student will find this guide confusing, and the drills will leave him scratching his head because he will not be able to reproduce the training effect.

The real targets of this guide to sparring are low ranking black belt students and instructors who can perform a nice kata, but when they get into the ring, they are humiliated. This guide will change your perspective from loving kata only to appreciating and even sometimes succeeding at sparring.

Strategy and tactics are the ways you use the weapons and resources you have. You should have the weapons already. Here, you will learn how to train yourself and your friends to put your fists and feet where you want them to go. You will learn how to accurately determine how far away someone is and convert that information into action. You will learn how to determine the right moment to strike, and you will also find some tricks you can use immediately to improve your chances in a sparring match against someone who is better than you are.

My approach is unorthodox. It is not intended to coach sparring champions from the national tournament and ready them for world class competition. It is intended to take someone who has decent basic techniques, the self-discipline to train on the side with a friend, and a particular lack of sparring ability and give them training they can use to become more of a challenge to defeat. Instead of losing instantly, you will become difficult to get past. You might not be the champ when you are through, but you will be better than you are now.

This is not just some text you read and walk away from with better skills. This is a training program, and to go through the entire thing properly might take you twelve months to three years. It is not going to be easy. You cannot just read a web site and improve your skills overnight. It will be a slow, long, and painfully time-consuming process, and you will suffer considerably both emotionally and physically. It will require great patience on your part and maybe a little some voluntary humiliation.

That's what we are going to do with your sparring skills
